GOD

Pander slumped in the rusting wheelchair.

I had questions. Big questions. What was he doing out there in the middle of nowhere? What was he up to in that lab? And why was he moonlighting behind the counter in that coffee shop?

Only the thought of the Landy prevented me from beating some answers out of him right there. I had to recover the cab. I pushed Pander up the ramp and into the car park, then dropped him out of the wheelchair onto the tarmac.

‘Watch him,’ I said to Starvie.

I took Fatty to look for his cart. We walked across the battlefield, towards the remains of the filling station. The tank was still wedged in the ruins, brewing up. They’d stashed Fatty’s trailer somewhere behind after our arrival. I doubted there was much left, but thought it worth a look. Besides, we needed to talk.

When we were out of sight I grabbed Fatty by the arm, wrenched it behind his back, and pinned him on the tank’s hot armour.

‘What the hell are you doing?’ he cried out.

‘Quiet down,’ I said. ‘I just want to review the day’s events.’

‘You don’t need to break my arm for that, you artificial artifuck.’

His clothes were steaming on the metal, letting off a pungent stink.

‘Did you know he was here?’

Fatty winced.

‘Who?’

‘Who do you think?’

‘Pander? Of course not. How the hell could I know?’

I twisted the arm a little higher. Fatty swore powerfully, but I was well enough repaired to keep him under control. His beard began to singe and smoke.

‘You’re crazy! You’re all absolutely fucking mad!’

‘No, just a little suspicious. You led us to his hiding place. You found the bomb in a cigarette packet. Then you picked the right key to effect a daredevil escape.’

‘You think I planned this?’

‘I don’t know what to think,’ I said. ‘Enlighten me.’

‘Like I said, I came here for the drugs. And they weren’t there, okay? That means I’m going to die. Happy?’

I thought about it for a moment, and let him go. He dropped to the ground, rubbing at his arm and staring into the tarmac.

‘You may as well just kill me now. That’s what you’re designed to do, isn’t it?’

‘No. Why doesn’t anybody get that?’

I stepped out from behind the tank and looked in the direction of Starvie and Pander. They were both very still. I nudged Fatty with my boot.

‘You’re coming with us. I need you to navigate us through to York.’

Fatty snarled.

‘I’m not feeling too motivated to help you out.’

I stepped over him.

‘You want some help?’

He must have taken that as a threat, because he shot out his foot and kicked me in my damaged ankle. I hit the ground. Fatty leapt onto my chest and tried to jam the barrel of a pistol into my right nostril.

‘Guess what I do have the motivation for?’ he said, his finger on the trigger.

‘I wasn’t trying to scare you,’ I said. ‘I was just going to point out that this trip might not have been a complete waste of time.
